ScanTailor Advanced is an open-source tool for tidying scanned pages before recognition or printing. Reach for it when a scan of a book, an archive or a stack of papers is untidy: pages are skewed, margins uneven, the background grey, a spread captured in one shot. It splits spreads into separate pages, straightens skew, cleans the background, sets uniform margins and prepares pages to be assembled into a document. It is interactive hand-finishing: you control every step, so the result is clearly better than automatic filters, especially on old and difficult scans. It is often a preparation stage before text recognition — a clean page is recognised more accurately. The recognition itself is done by other tools; ScanTailor handles image quality.
