FoundationDB — Apple's Distributed Transactional Key-Value Store

★ 16.8K

FoundationDB is an open-source distributed transactional key-value store developed by Apple. Teams reach for it when they need to keep large volumes of structured data across several servers without giving up strict guarantees: money transfers, order ledgers or service state where two records must never diverge. Another common case is building a custom data model on top of it, such as documents, queues or indexes. Under the hood it is an ordered key-value store with ACID transactions, meaning every operation either completes in full or does not happen at all, even if one node fails. The core is written in C++. Compared with a typical SQL database, FoundationDB offers a low-level but highly reliable foundation, and developers write the layers with their own logic on top. It is a tool for engineers designing backend systems: it has no ready-made interface for tables or reports, and it is overkill for a small website or a bot.
