How Long It Really Takes to Get Your First Order

How Long It Really Takes to Get Your First Order

"You'll have clients in a week" is what almost everyone promises, and almost always it isn't true. The honest answer sounds different: the time to a first order depends not on you but on how many touches you make. Three evenings to the first reply with a price. About twenty touches to a client. People usually give up after two.

In short, if you're pressed for time

The client picks the timing of an order, not you. What depends on you is something else: how many times you knocked.

Three evenings to the first replies with a price. Service and niche, a showcase, a profile and a reply template, the first ten replies sent.

The touch math: about 20 touches → 5–7 replies → 2–3 calls → 1 client.

People usually give up after two touches instead of twenty. This is the main reason a first order "doesn't come".

A touch is not only a response to a listing. A message to a business you know, a comment, a post, an answer in a chat.

We won't promise a specific date for a first order. Nobody can know it.

"How long to wait?"

This is the question our bot gets when a person has almost made up their mind. And it's the question almost everyone who teaches earning from neural networks answers the same way: "in a week", "in a month you'll reach an income", "first clients in the first days".

A person hears this, starts, sends two responses, gets silence, and decides something is wrong with them. After all, everyone was promised a week.

The expectation broke before the work began.

Where the numbers come from

The touch math is laid out by Sergey Molokov, a sales expert with six years of practice, who teaches our "Sales" course and the live session "How to sell AI services if you've never sold". It is a rule of thumb from practice, not a promise.

And that there is a flow of orders is visible in the Parselona feed (a Russian service that collects freelance orders from chats): 5,986 orders over four months, 49 a day. The orders exist. The question is how many times you reach for them.

Why "a week" doesn't work

Root cause: the time to do the work is confused with the time of the funnel. Doing the work takes an evening. Finding someone who will pay for it takes twenty touches. These are different clocks, and the second one doesn't speed up with skill.

Misconception: "if two responses got no answer, I'm doing something wrong." Two responses are a tenth of the way. At that distance silence is not a signal; it's the norm.

Systemic factor: a promised timeline sells training. "You'll have clients in a week" sounds better than "in twenty touches". So the honest answer goes unsaid, and a person gives up where the path has only just begun.

What it looks like step by step

To the first reply: three evenings

Evening 1. Service and niche. One service, one niche. Not "I do everything for everyone".

Evening 2. The showcase. Ten pieces of work for the chosen niche, signed honestly: task, solution, time. No invented clients.

Evening 3. Profile, reply template and the first ten replies.

After the third evening you are at the start. Not at the finish, at the start.

Then, twenty touches

TouchesWhat usually happens
1–2silence; this is where most people give up
about 205–7 replies
from the replies2–3 calls
from the calls1 client

This isn't a law of nature; for some it's faster, for some longer. But that is the order of magnitude. Twenty touches is not a month. It's ten responses over two evenings, or three a day for a week.

What counts as a touch

Not only a response to a listing:

Where to find listings at the first step: Telegram chats with requests and hh.ru (a Russian job site) before freelance exchanges, since on the exchanges beginners compete on price. The feed from chats is collected by Parselona: a free trial period, promo code ai_skill gives 15% off.

Why we don't name a date

Because nobody knows it. Whoever names one is selling a dream.

In our subscriber survey, 91.9% earned nothing from AI or earned once. That is an ordinary starting point, not a sentence. Students' first money often came from images: Natalia, $85 for half an hour of work; Pavel, a logo for $24. But those are stories about the scale of a first step, not about timing: everyone's is different.

What to do today

One action, five minutes.

Start a touch counter. An ordinary note on your phone: date, to whom, what they answered.

The goal for the week is not "find a client" but reach twenty. The client is a consequence of the counter, not the goal.

Write to the consultant bot how many touches you made in the last month. Usually it turns out to be fewer than five, and that's the best news, because it means you simply haven't reached the client yet.
