Terrascope

★ 313

Terrascope is an open-source interactive world map for the terminal, drawn with Braille Unicode characters and terminal colors. People reach for it when they want to follow aircraft in the sky right from the terminal, when they need a quick weather summary for cities without a browser, or when they want to see recent earthquakes and the day/night boundary on one map. The program shows countries and place names, live aircraft positions, city weather, radar data, earthquakes and day/night zones. The project is written in Python, and the interface is built on the curses library; the repository topics include aircraft tracking, maps and terminal applications. Its difference from web maps is that everything runs in the console, including over SSH and on a server without graphics. Limits: map resolution is limited by terminal characters, so it is an overview tool rather than a replacement for full cartography; live aircraft, weather and earthquake data come from external sources, and the program cannot show them without a network connection.
