AI Shorts Generator is an open-source alternative to tools like Opus Clip and Klap that turns long videos into ready-to-post vertical clips. Creators, agencies and developers use it when they want shorts for TikTok, Reels and YouTube Shorts without a subscription, minute caps or watermarks. It transcribes speech with Whisper, finds the strongest moments with a language model, scores each highlight for viral potential, writes an opening hook and automatically crops the video to 9:16 or another aspect ratio. Two modes are available: one that relies on an external API, and a local mode built on yt-dlp, faster-whisper and ffmpeg where you choose OpenAI or Gemini for the model step. You can run it from the command line or import it as a Python library, and export results as JSON. It needs Python 3.10 or newer and installs with pip. It is released under the MIT license.
